International Women's Day 2026 – From Migrant to Community Leader

This International Women's Day, we celebrate the women whose leadership strengthens our community every day — women who lead with courage, compassion and conviction.

As CEO of the Goldfields Community Legal Centre (GCLC), Anita Nathan's leadership is shaped not only by professional expertise, but by lived experience. As a migrant woman, she arrived in Australia with no qualifications but only with determination to survive and become successful, navigating new systems, a new culture and a new language. That journey gave her a deep understanding of what it means to find your voice and your place in a community.

Today, she leads GCLC with that same strength and empathy. The Centre provides free and confidential legal assistance across family law, tenancy, elder abuse and domestic violence matters. For many women and families in the Goldfields, GCLC is more than a legal service — it is a place of safety, dignity and empowerment.

Deepening the Centre's Impact

Under Anita's leadership, the organisation has strengthened its focus on early intervention, community education and culturally respectful service delivery. She believes that when people understand their rights and feel supported to exercise them, they are better equipped to build stable, independent futures.

Her collaborative approach has deepened partnerships across the region, ensuring vulnerable women, children and families have clear pathways to safety and support. At the same time, she mentors and uplifts her predominantly female team, fostering a culture of ethical leadership, accountability and inclusion.

Progress Is Driven by Action

International Women's Day reminds us that progress is driven by action. Anita's journey from migrant to community leader reflects the power of opportunity, perseverance and service. Her story is a testament to a simple but powerful truth: leadership is not defined by where you begin, but by the impact you create.

Through her steady leadership and the dedication of her team, GCLC continues to create meaningful change — helping women and families across the Goldfields move forward with confidence and hope.
