From the CEO – Celebrating Harmony Day 2026
The Goldfields community came together this month to celebrate Harmony Day 2026, with the official commencement taking place on 15 March 2026 at Curtin University's Kalgoorlie Campus.
Harmony Day is an important occasion that recognises and celebrates Australia's cultural diversity and promotes the message that everyone belongs. The Goldfields region has long been enriched by people from many cultures and backgrounds who live, work and contribute to the strength of our community.
This year's Harmony Day celebrations are a collaborative initiative led by the Goldfields Community Legal Centre (GCLC), the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder (CKB) and the Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI), in partnership with Curtin University Kalgoorlie Campus. This partnership reflects the strong community spirit of the Goldfields and a shared commitment to promoting cultural understanding, social cohesion and equal opportunity for all.
The launch event brought together community leaders, service organisations, students and residents to recognise the positive contributions multicultural communities make to the social, economic and cultural life of our region.
An Educational Program for Young People
As part of Harmony Week, GCLC delivered an educational school program across local high schools, designed to encourage young people to embrace diversity and build respectful school communities.
The presentation, titled "Interwoven: Our Stories, Cultures and Connections," aligned with the objectives of Harmony Week and included an Acknowledgement of Country, an overview of Harmony Week and its national significance, and an exploration of the theme "Interwoven" within a regional Western Australian context.
Students also took part in an interactive "Interwoven Map" activity, highlighting the diversity within the Goldfields community. The session included discussions on rights, respect and inclusion under Australian law, as well as a reflective segment designed to encourage empathy and understanding among young people.
The program was designed to be age-appropriate for high school students, supporting respectful school environments, cultural understanding and student well-being. It concluded with a student-focused call to action, encouraging young people to become leaders in promoting inclusion within their schools and communities.
Our Diversity Is Our Strength
Harmony Day reminds us that our diversity is our strength. By coming together and recognising the many cultures that call the Goldfields home, we continue to build a community based on respect, inclusion and understanding.
I encourage community members, local organisations and leaders to attend and support the commencement of Harmony Day 2026, celebrating the unity and diversity that define the Goldfields community.
